Memoir of Cat Part 1

For Intro to Creative Writing and Editing, our final project for the Creative Non-Fiction section is to write a memoir, personal essay, person essay, or place essay. I chose memoir as it is genre I enjoy and I already what topic I wanted to write about. There is nothing dearer to my heart than my pets, present and past. My major dream right now isn't working for the New York Times or writing a novel. It's owning two German Shepherds... or maybe a beagle.
Since I brought him into my life full-time, Sparta has been the being in my life that my day revolves around and his around me. I can't start the day properly without cleaning up cat vomit. I can't end the day without cuddling with him on the couch. So, I wrote a memoir about him and what pets have meant to me during my life. Here is part 1.

Piddy Paws and Sparta...when they still got along

[The Untitled Sparta Project]
"Shards of glass gleamed in the yellow light of my lamp. Glitter twinkled among the threads of dark carpet. Adrenaline pumped through my body waking me fully from my deep sleep as I stared at the mess and slowly came to the conclusion that nearly everything had been destroyed. Yellow eyes stared back at me across the mess with fear and curiosity. I realized I was in way over my head.
Sanibel
Growing up, pets were a central fix on my life. My mother, who deserved to be the wife of Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, played wife, mother of two, and high school biology teacher when she was not imitating Irwin by wrestling our life-sized crocodile float for the backyard pool. Real life drove a stake between her and her dreams of rescuing wildlife and working with Siberian tigers. However, that did not stop her from passing on a love and respect for animals to me, her oldest daughter. I, too, became obsessed with every furry creature that passed my way, and together, we rescued several baby rabbits, raised monarch butterflies, and took in abandoned kittens. All of our own pets, except the reptiles and small mammals, were picked up off the street or adopted from the local shelter. It seemed as if we were always bringing in a new animal because, ironically, we were never able to keep them alive for whatever reason. Sandy the lizard froze to death, Nibbles the guinea pig just fell down dead, my first hamster was eaten by the cat, Nikki the cat had an aggressive streak that bordered psychotic making her unsafe, and Frisky the cat disappeared one frosty morning and was never seen again.
Turquoise
When Sparta entered my life, we had Candy the dog, Piddy Paws the cat, and Turquoise the turtle. Ma recently put down her long-haired, pink-nosed cat Luca who had taken the place of her one true love, Sanibel the white-haired cat of princes. Now, she had found a new replacement under a car at a gas station at two in the morning. His nose was light like a cougar’s, he had gigantic lemur-like golden eyes, and a strange brindle pattern over half his face and down his back.

Candy
Sitting on the couch, I was watching TV as usual. My sister Abbey always went to bed late, which meant that I got the TV in the morning since she’d sleep until at least noon on the weekends and in the summer. That morning, Abbey emerged from her room earlier than usual. It took two glances before I noticed the bright-eyed kitten sitting in her arms.
“Look, Alexa!” she squeaked, cuddling the kitten as Candy tried furiously to get at what was in her arms. The kitten was completely unfazed by the short dog and kept his eyes on me. Immediately, I reached for it; furry animals were like a magnet for me.
Nutmeg
After the usual whining and crying, Ma relented that we could keep the new kitten much to Piddy Paws’ annoyance and Candy’s excitement. It took quite some time to come up with a name, but after watching a YouTube video about a crazy, exuberant cat, we settled on the name of Sparta, or Spartacus when he had done something wrong.
After adjusting to his new home, we realized that Sparta was unlike the usual cat. Aside from his strange but beautiful coat of miniscule stripes on his head, leopard rosettes down his back, and a ringed tail, Sparta had several characteristics of a friendly dog. YouTube overflows with videos of cats that attack, spit, and hiss at their poor owners who only want to reach out and stroke them. Sparta never attacked out of viciousness no matter what oddball position he found himself in among our arms. At the shake of a feather toy, Sparta back flipped and leaped into the air with ease and agility. He even played fetch for small furry mice toys, bounding after them and prancing back with the toy in his mouth. Occasionally, a strange gleam would enter his large eyes, and he’d streak down the various hallways with gusto and craziness.
Then, I never knew how much of a part Sparta would play in my life. I already had a cat with Piddy Paws. Piddy was a stray I picked out of a litter at the local animal shelter as a replacement to yet another cat we could not keep alive to old age. Piddy Paws, a fat regular cat, was my whole world all through middle school and high school, and when I went to college and lived in a residence hall for a year, it was Piddy Paws I cried over incessantly, longing to return to my friend. In my sophomore year, I was allowed to have a pet in my new apartment. Piddy Paws was the cat I wanted, but Piddy Paws was also the cat that refused to use the litter box and peed on random objects. The smell of cat pee is a nose-cringing, breath-holding monstrosity that cannot be removed. To take Piddy to my new apartment would be a one-way ticket to eviction, but I had to have a pet with me. I also felt it was unfair for my mom to solely care for my cat and turtle, so I decided to pull Sparta out of her home and into mine instead of picking out a new friend from the animal shelter..."

The Must List, October 27

1. "Love to Me" from The Light in the Piazza musical
In my opinion, this is the most beautiful, most innocent love song ever sung!! It will melt your heart.
2. "Rumor Has It/Someone Like You" mash-up from Glee
What a fun song by the Trouble Tones, a group from the hit show Glee. It's fun, it's sassy, it's girl power! And, it features the amazing singing talents of character Santana as she comes to terms with being in love with fellow cheerleader Britney.
3. Halloween candy
YES!!! It's socially acceptable to eat as much junk food and candy as possible again! I love this time of year because I can indulge in my candy addiction without being chastised... as much, anyway! There's now a large bowl on our kitchen counter filled with Nerds, Crunch bars, Laffy Taffy, Air Heads, Pixy Stix, and Butterfinger bars! Delicious!! Now, how to resist having some for breakfast?
4. Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch
Yeah, probably my favorite breakfast cereal. I have loved it since I was a kid! Peanut buttery goodness mixed with crunchy-ness and cold milk, what's not to love? It's better than the regular Cap'n Crunch. I will admit the Crunch Berries are pretty awesome, but nothing compares to the Peanut Butter! Whoever said let's make cereal that tastes like peanut butter is my hero!
5. Green Street Hooligans
It takes about half the movie to finally understand the British English being spoken, but this is a movie with a fast-paced plot and such a satisfying ending --- arguably, the most satisfying ending in film history!! Matt is kicked out of Harvard just before graduating after his roommate frames him with drug possession. He flies to England to visit his sister and nephew where he meets his brother-in-law's brother, Pete. Pete runs the local hooligans that cheer for the West Ham United football team. It's more than a match to them. It's blood, guts, glory, fighting, and life and death. Elijah Wood sheds his Frodo baby face for this moving, gutsy movie alongside future Sons of Anarchy VP  Charlie Hunnam. Be sure to check it out.
6. The Hobbit updates
Come on, you know that you're secretly checking all the different movie blogs to get more and more details about The Hobbit. It's the most anticipated movie release since The Lord of the Rings. Sir Ian McKellen is back as Gandalf the Grey, Elijah Wood is back as Frodo, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, and Ian Holms is back as the old Bilbo Baggins. This is the movie event of the DECADE!!! And, it's a trilogy yet again! This is an epic moment in film history you're not going to want to miss!

Pumpkin Pie Pudding

In the style of the other family conversation I wrote about, here is what happened on Tuesday afternoon at my grandparents' house. Pawpaw baked me a pumpkin pie for my birthday, and there was an interesting conversation that followed! KFC buckets litter the dining room table. Pawpaw and I are scarfing down delicious pie.

Pawpaw: You can buy that pizza crust in a package like a cookie thing. You just add hot water to it and mix it up and let it sit.

Stuart: I know what you're talking about. We haven't done it.

Pawpaw: It will almost make a 12 inch, but I think it call for a 10 inch to make it right, but it still - as thin as I pressed that out - it was still a real thick crust on it.

Stuart: You ever seen that, baby?

Me: Mm, no!

Stuart: It's like a... yeah, it's like a dough. You just add water to and mix it together.

Pawpaw: I think it's Betty Crocker. It's about like a (holds up his hands) about that size!

Stuart: We did make pizza at home awhile ago. It turned out really good. We just got the Pillsbury dough in a can, you know, and popped it open and pressed it out onto a rectangular baking sheet, and it turned out pretty good. She liked it. I was actually surprised. We just used the same --- are you making a video?

Me: (whisper) Yeah.

Stuart: Ok. We just used the same...

Pawpaw: This is good! You can almost call this pumpkin pudding with crust!! Good, good, good!

Me: Well, if you had put it in the fridge! It didn't have to be pudding!

Nanny: I don't know why he didn't.

Pawpaw: What?
Nanny: Put that in the fridge!

Stuart: Well, mine's going in the fridge. I like my pumpkin pie cold!

Pawpaw: I just done the cooking. I can't think of everything!

Nanny: Everything he cooks falls apart.

Me: Just like the lasagna.

Nanny: Mhmm!

Papaw: (To Stuart) Put it in the freezer!

Nanny: And the meatloaf. Even though I mix it up and put it in the oven, he'll take it out and cannot wait two seconds for it to cool before he cuts it, and then you got one meatball mess to eat and it makes me ill! (Points at me) Uh oh! She's got taking ---

Me: Oh! No!

Nanny: I SEE THE GREEN LIGHT!

Pawpaw: Green light!

Stuart: She's learned not to mess with my cooking. She's learned to stay out of the kitchen.

Pawpaw: It's a good thing I've got a spoon!

Nanny: (To Stuart) Well, it's different. You two aren't married. I can't get rid of him!

Pawpaw: It is good though, wasn't it? Regardless, it's good! You want another piece?
Me: I ain't finished yet!

Stuart: So?

Me: (To Pawpaw) You want another piece?

Pawpaw: Not yet! I'm gonna put it in the freezer cause it's still warm.

Nanny: Well, no wonder it fell apart. Now we know.

Pawpaw: Meh, I'll stick it in the freezer!

Where I'm From

It started with a drop of McCoy blood,
That long ago infamous feud,
Now filmed for television in order that
My kin be laughed at and discussed
(Not that they weren't before)
And here I am, my sisters and I, seventh generation.

From three months of Sunshine, too much,
North Carolina was the right fit for us.
A little town - Mt. Hollywood, we called her.
We kids believed to be made for bigger lives.
And so they dreamed, and I wrote -
A sign of boredom at first
Now, a career choice I look forward to regretting.

From childhood, growing up like a stubborn, endless weed
Reciting Dr. Seuss before learning how to read,
From animals of both me and those as pets
Me as a cheetah, horse, wolf, growling dog,
Breathing animals: cats, dogs, fish, frozen lizard,
Oh, the green snake, hermit crab, hamsters galore,
Baby birds, week-long guinea pig, and the turtle that refuses death.

From books to falling for film
Moonstruck, Moulin Rouge, Adventureland, The Lion King
Oh, longing to do that!
Met by my mother's harsh tongue and quick sting
Still, I dreamed on a bed by the window
Where the trees' leaves fell over and over again
Until cut down, I tearfully plotted revenge.

From running barefoot on the splintered deck
Round the pool, both swimming hole and frog love boat
Never tanning, always burning my white Welsh skin
Resisting school for summer's play or tuning out to write the day away
In a world that only made sense in my head
Until college showed up and brought me here instead.

The Must List, October 13

1. Harry Potter Memes
Memes are great, and some of my favorites make fun of Harry Potter! There's nothing more hilarious than a snarky Voldemort!
2. Blood Feud: The Hatfields & The McCoys: The Epic Story of Murder & Vengeance by Lisa Alther
There's no better way to learn about your family than picking up the latest nonfiction novel with a gruesome title about them! Yes, I'm a McCoy, and I love startling people with that information. This novel paints a very realistic tale about the feud, both the how it started and why it kicked back up after some years of silence. The mini series is also fantastic but not as accurate. I wanted to know what really happened, so I picked up this book.
3.  "Moonlight" TV series
Unfortunately, this show was canceled right on the brink of vampire mania. It was just after this show that the Twilight book series became popular and shows like "The Vampire Diaries" and "True Blood" made it big! Alex O'Loughlin plays Mick St. John, a vampire private eye. His best friend Josef (Jason Dohring) is the multi-millionaire type that never really admits what he does and provides witty humor. Beth is Mick's love interest, a human who he rescued from his psycho ex-vampire-wife who kidnapped her. While Mick and Beth solve temporary mysteries throughout the show, the main storyline revolves around whether Mick's ex is still alive and if she's found a cure for vampirism. Best episodes: "Sleeping Beauty" and "Fated to Pretend."
4. "It's Been a Long, Long Time" by Kitty Kallen
I can be a sucker for 40s and bandstand music. One of my favorite playlist to have going during dinner is one composed of different 40s and 50s favorites. I found this song that way. Take a listen!
5. Cat videos on YouTube
Wow, Stuart and I really got sucked into this. Watch: Luna falls in bathtub, Cat regrets entering bath, Elaine burrows in snow, and Rascal the Cat and the Toilet Rat!!! HILARIOUS!
6. Homemade Lemonade!!
3 cups of cold water
1 cup of lemon juice
3/4 cups of sugar
Stir until the sugar is dissolved! Drink!

Place

This is an exercise I did for Introduction to Creative Writing and Editing class. We're talking about nonfiction writing currently. For our final project, I've chosen to write a memoir.

Too many text messages. Too many phone calls. Too much yelling, bustling, hustling, screaming, arguing, fighting, running, dashing, working, typing, writing, delivering, creating, caring! I just want it all to end. I pull into my driveway, and there is my beautiful home with its overgrown grass and thick weeds because the landlord keeps forgetting to weedeat. There's one of the little hummingbirds whizzing high up into the thick branches of a tree to hide as I walk down the unstable row of stepping stones to the front door. I twist my Hawaiian-decorated key in the lock then step through door with a sigh of relief. Here, I can unravel. Here, I can't run into anyone I know or be forced to have a conversation or say thank you, and I can ignore the dirty dishes and the floor that needs to be swept and the toilet that needs to be cleaned if I want to. Sparta comes prancing out of nowhere and instantly starts meowing for attention. His devotion and love is unconditional no matter how many times I've given him a bath or scalded his skin with flea medication or accidentally bopped him on the nose with whatever it is I'm holding at the time. I peel off my high heeled shoes, unzip my slacks, throw off my shirt and head to the bathroom. My dinosaur-shaped toothbrush holder smiles at me as I rub all the make-up off my face and recognize myself again in the mirror. Then, I head to my bedroom on the other side of the house. All the while, Sparta is trotting along beside me. I pull on one of Stuart's shirts because they're so comfy and my UNCG sweatpants before collapsing on the big leather sofa in front of the TV. I turn on the TV. I turn on the Wii. Then, I get ready for some much needed NetFlix therapy. Yes, it's good to be home.

The Must List, Oct 6

1. Sherlock Holmes' "Mind Palace"
This scene happens in Season 2, Episode 2. What a beautifully constructed scene that completely takes you into the mindset and thought process of Benedict Cumberbatch's interpretation of Sherlock Holmes!! Check it out HERE!
2. "The Light in the Piazza" at the Haywood Regional Arts Theater
I saw this musical last night, and it was such a treat!! Why is it completely under the radar? The acting was top notch, especially the college-aged actors (which included two of my friends) that spoke Italian 75% of the time even though they are your average Southern American boys! One word: IMPRESSIVE. A 20-something girl and her mother travel to Florence, Italy to see the sights the mother visited on her honeymoon with the father. Almost immediately, the girl, Clara, meets Fabrizio - a young Italian man who immediately falls for the redhead American. But, there's a secret that Clara's mother is covering up. Will she ever expose the secret? And, will Fabrizio's love withstand the truth?
3. Foot insoles
Recently, I found out that I am flat-footed. My chiropractor set it up that I received custom-made insoles for free thanks to my insurance!!! HIP HIP HOORAY! I still walk around campus in high heels, but now, my feet aren't achy or sore. The insoles have made a huge difference in every which way. My lower back isn't in pain all the time, and I stand strong. They are even created to fall short of my toes in order not to hang over or be visible when wearing open-toed shoes. I strongly recommend everyone get some!
4. "Sons of Anarchy" Season 4
The drama is back in this original FX series about motorcycle club, Sons of Anarchy. Jax and the gang have been released from prison and now must deal with the sheriff's department that has taken control of their town of Charming. Gemma, my favorite character, is on the warpath to keep Jax from finding out the truth about his father, but Jax wants out of the club altogether. I can't wait for disc 2 to arrive!!
Gemma in "Sons of Anarchy"
5.  Appalachian Mountains in the fall
The leaves have started changing their color, and it is glorious to watch on an every day basis. Driving to school is even enjoyable because of the sheer beauty that surrounds Little Honda. I highly suggest taking a trip and visiting soon before any heavy rain knocks all the leaves off the trees.
6. Daniel Radcliffe in Horns
Didn't see that one coming did you? Harry Potter is back!!!
